Staff Spotlight:
Insurance Defense Paralegal Carly

What is your role at the firm?

Litigation Paralegal

How long have you been at the firm ?

One Year

What is your typical day at the firm?

I am a paralegal that contributes support to the insurance defense team.  The client base is compiled of insurance companies.  A majority of my time is spent drafting and answering written discovery, which may also include electronically redacting no-fault claims files for production to opposing counsel.  I am in constant contact with other law offices to schedule depositions for claimants, witnesses and medical treaters, and I also draft notices and subpoenas, schedule Independent Medical Evaluations or Records Reviews with experts, and coordinate surveillance assignments for some claims. .

What is your favorite part of your role and what aspect is the most challenging?

The best aspect of this position is the variety of the files I get to work on and the diverse personalities of the handling attorneys for each file.  That variety can also be a challenge, since it may be difficult to remember the details of a file I haven’t actively worked on in a few weeks. Once I review the discovery and/or read the attorney summaries I am able to come up to speed easily.  Overall, the people at Willingham & Cote work together fluidly and I value that wholeheartedly.

What is one element of your role/the firm that people might not realize?

Working with different attorneys on various litigation files can be tricky to maneuver when there are so many different facts for each case. I wish I was blessed with the gift that Attorney Dave Nelson has to remember details of files in an instant.

Anything else you would like to share?

I have been working in the legal field as support staff for over 20 years.  I took a hiatus after my second son was born and pursued cosmetology.  I wanted to have a marketable skill to fall back on, plus hair & make up was always an interest of mine.  I worked as a colorist for about 5 years in a mid-sized salon, but despite my strong client base I missed working in a legal office.
