How did you choose the law as a profession?
I love reading about history, politics, and government. I like to write and wanted to improve my writing skills. I also enjoy public speaking. For these and other reasons I am surely forgetting, the practice of law appeared to be a good choice.
What type of law do you practice?
I practice medical malpractice defense litigation. In layman’s terms, I defend health care professionals when their patients claim that their care did not meet professional standards and they were harmed as a result.
What is your favorite aspect of working at the firm?
I enjoy the constant problem-solving required to be a good attorney. I also enjoy the camaraderie between the lawyers at the firm. We have many highly experienced lawyers and I enjoy learning from them. I enjoy the occasional chats with our wonderful staff as well.
What aspect of your role is the most challenging or that people might not expect/understand?
This career is very demanding of your time. The travel can also be tiring, though it is fun visiting new places.
What do you like about working in East Lansing?
I like to be near the MSU campus, and sometimes bring my dog Ted to work and take him for a walk on weekends. I also enjoy the modern art at the Broad Museum.
What is your typical day/week like at the firm?
I spend a good portion communicating by phone, e-mail, or letters with clients, colleagues, and outside attorneys. I also write quite a few briefs for the court to review. I usually will travel a few times to argue motions in court or take the depositions of witnesses. I will also usually have lunch a couple times with colleagues during the week.
If you could change one aspect of the role as an attorney, what would it be?
I think our roles as attorneys are well-defined and I wouldn’t change much about that. I would like the public to know more about the practice of law and understand our roles better. For instance, I believe public defenders should be more numerous and paid more highly as they serve an extremely valuable role in society and they do not receive the government support and funding they deserve.
What do you like to do when not working?
I like to spend lots of time with my wife, Lauren. I enjoy playing with my dog, Teddy, and my cats, Charlotte and Pancho. I like to watch Star Trek and soccer. I like to play soccer, but I am out for a while with a knee injury. I also enjoy comedy podcasts.
